THE REAL MCCOY'S BUCO MODELS

This was the latest Buco Model made available by The Real McCoy's of Japan - these have been sold out for some time now.  They retailed for just over nine bills and can be found on the auction block every now and then.

This model was made from at least the late 90's/early 2000's until about the mid-2000's.  The toe tracks on these were made more prominent.  The same last and profile is still used today by Toy's McCoy under the Beck name minus the toe tracks.  They can be had for just over eight bills.

I own both the Buco's and Beck's, so please feel free to ask any questions.

Here are my Becks fresh from Japan

After approximately two years

  1. Nice boots! I forget if these were both horsehide. I find these to be a mix of old Chippewas but with the squarish buckle of the RW 2268. These boots are only going to get more expensive. I might have to trade in my guitars for a pair.

  2. Thanks bud! Yes, they are both horsehide and are sure to outlive me.

    Cheers!

  3. The beck after two years are just beautiful. John do you feel that the beck boots are hard to put on? I recently bought a pair of beck from yahoo japan and need nearly half an hour to put them on every time.

  4. They were actually the tiniest bit loose when using the last hole, so I added another hole and now it's just a tad bit tight to put on, but beyond that it's a great fitting pair of boots.

  5. Thanks a lot for the reply. I just wish one day my beck will age like yours:)

  6. Herr John, are BECKs horsehide (the tag on your BECKs in picture no. 3 doesn' t say what kind of hide they are made of) ?

  7. Hi Victor. Check out the second to the last picture. On the left boot within the white rectangle line, it reads "Genuine Horsehide."

Yeah, they veg-tanned and if you go down the post where I show all my boots, you can see a more recent photo of it showing the awesome wear.

    Cheers!

  8. Hi John .
    A question from Spain :
The Beck you can buy right now called TBA9901 on internet ( TAKEOFF-C) is horsehide too ? And what about the brown ones ?
    Thanks ,
    M

  9. Mikel, looks like Toys McCoy changed it up a bit - both TBA9901 colors are made of Steerhide, whereas, the model I own, TMA6608 is made of horsehide. That's too bad. I really like the brown model and always thought they were hosrehide.

Hope this clears it up for you.

    Cheers!

  10. John, it always pays to be an early adopter like yourself. BECKs in horsehide for only 71,400 Yens while the dollar was strong. Those who are late to the party like Senor Mikel from Espana gotta cough up more moolas for the same BECKs and in steerhide. Imho, correct me if I am wrong, horsehide is thicker and has a higher quality surface than the hides from bovines. Btw John, how do you know that both TBA9901' s are made of cowhides?

  11. I never thought about it that way, Victor, but yeah...I guess it does pay off. Either, way they still use the same lasts. It's a bit discouraging; however, that they are using steerhide yet still charging about the same.

You are correct on the difference between the two leathers.

I translated the sites that sell TBA9901's and they are both described as steerhide.

  12. Herr John, it hurts when exchange rate fluctuations are all downside for the Greenbacks versus the Yens or the Euros. It really puts a damper on buying stuff from abroad!

  13. Hey John, are the Bucos and Becks sized half larger than tagged? I just calculated the Buco Horsehide re-issue BA10010. Damn near $1600… Oh well, I guess love is never cheap.

  14. 1600 Bucks for BUCO BA10010' s, holy smoke! Better get them now bcs i don' t see the Yens getting any weaker. Back in '08 when Monsieur John got his BUCOs and BECKs, it was like 105 Yens to uno Dollare, excellent timing John !!!

  15. Jeez Louise - $1,600?? Really?!? I knew our dollar was weak, but not that weak. Insane! I guess I'm lucky as Victor said.

I would say they are both a half size larger than tagged. My Buco's may be put on the auction block for that reason, but I just think it'll be hard to part with them.
