THE REAL MCCOY'S BUCO ENGINEER BOOTS UPDATE

I recieved a request for an updated picture of my Buco Engineer Boots.  The last time I posted them, they were fresh out of the box.

August 2008

I just noticed the box states the boots are brown - Hardly.
Buco's are top left corner taken September 2010 - this is the only photo I have available at the moment.  This is only part of the collection.  I snapped it while cleaning out my closet.  I wish I could find the other box of boots.

  1. Fantastic collection of expensive boots. You' ve got an excellent bargain for paying only 84,000 YENs in '08 for the horsehide BUCOs and what made them a great purchase was back in '08 the exchange rate was very much in the Dollar' s favor. Today, the cost for the same BUCOS has almost doubled in YENs. And with a weak Dollar, a pair of new BUCOS carries a stratospheric price tag.

  2. Very true! Of course I had proxy fees on top of that, so in the end I think I paid somewhere over nine for them.

Knowing what I know now about the quality, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase them at today's rate.

    Cheers!

  4. Please tell us about the brown boots top right. They look fantastic! Don't think I've seen you post pictures of them before...

  5. Bingo! You had me convinced, regardless of what the currency exchange rate stands at, to get me self a pair of Horsehide BUCOs with their signature toe-tracks. BTW, among your collection, the BUCOs have the most bad ass but authentic looking buckles!

  6. Chris, those boot were made by the now defunct Japanese company called Jubilee. In the 1990's and early 2000's, they reproduced some of the best 1950's rock n roll shoes. The boots are in excellent condition, 'cause for some reason I'm reluctant to break them in - they look great all beat up, too. They're a great reproduction of 1940's Engineer/Riding Boots.

Deluxe, those boots are Frye Brando's (now called (Rand's). They are the best kept secret. They are essentially, in my mind, a five-hundred dollar pair of boots that retail for about $250, but you can get them on eBay for somewhere over a bill.

Victor, if you ever break down and get a pair, try to get the early 2000 model. Those are veg-tanned with brass buckle (again, same as the new Becks) with a more prominent toe track. They look really tough. I missed a pair a couple years back in my size for only five bills.

I'll be adding to my collection soon, so be sure to keep an eye out.

    Cheers!!

  7. Thanks John. I have seen pictures of them new before but they look so good broken in I didn't recognize them.

I've got a pair of Road Champs on their way this week otherwise this would have convinced me to snagg a pair.

    Great stuff... Steve

  8. Steve - good job on the Road Champs. I'm really leaning towards them when I get back. I'm affraid to order them as some people have stated the "odd" sizing. I'm no more than an hour and a half from L.A., so I'm going to try them on first.

I'd love to see pics when you get 'em.

  9. "hour and a half away"... I'm in the U.K so I'm really hoping they fit!

I'd be more than glad to share some pics of them. I also have a pair of Hukurokuju resoled Red Wing 2268s and a pair of Narrow Wescos that you might be interested in seeing.

  10. I'm sure they'll fit just fine. Looks like we have the same taste in Engineers - I've got my sites set on a pair of Narrow's as well. I'd love to see them.

  12. Thanks Mikel!!

  13. I've sent an email with pics and details including my take on how they run size wise but for the benefit of anyone else reading this here's how I've found them.
They are true-to-size so go with what you normally take. I'm an 11 in all my boots and shoes including the Red Wing's and Wesco's mentioned above. So I'd say don't size up or down.
When I made enquiries on size it was mentioned I may need to go down half a size. This wouldn't have worked, they'd have been too small.
Dig deep John and go for a pair, you won't regret it!

  14. Thanks a bunch Steve! Oh I made up my mind and these boots will be my first purchase when I return. It will be my third pair for about the same price. I can't wait. You are the first person to say they are TTS.

    Cheers!!!

  15. John, do you find your horsehide Bucos (model no. BA6010-030) true-to-size?

  16. Hi Victor - I would say they are a half size larger. Mine are marked 8 1/2 and they fit like a size 9.

    Hope this helps.

  17. Danke Sehr y Mucho Gracias, John! Your opinion will certainly help when I order the BUCOs. IMHO, engineer boots invariably tend to run half a size bigger but please correct me if I am wrong.

  18. De Nada - No worries, Victor. That is true for most Engineer Boots, but as far are Chippewa's go they are TTS, IMO.

  20. Thanks Go Nagai! If available, I'm hoping to add a pair of Mister Freedom "Road Champs" and another pair of custom Wesco's (if not "Narrow's") to my collection when I return.

    Cheers!

  21. Your engineer boots collection from left to right are: BUCOs, unknown make, BECKs, WESCO BOSS, WORKS AMERICA perhaps?, unknown make. What brands are the unknowns?

Senor John, you need to add Lone Wolf' s to your collection.
