CATALINA ISLAND AIR SHOW

The first Catalina Island Air Show and Festival, celebrating a century of aviation on the island, will be held 29 and 30 September 2012.

*I really dig the Official Poster depicting a WWII+ Marine Corps T-6/SNJ-5 Texan trainer.

Avalon Bay and Avalon Canyon form a natural amphitheater, making Avalon an excellent spectator location from its beautiful beaches, boats and hotels

Come for the weekend and enjoy this unique destination that boasts a variety of recreational activities, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.

It was a century ago this year that aviation legend Glenn L. Martin took off from the waters of Newport Beach and landed in Avalon Bay in a box kite-like aircraft he had constructed in an abandoned church in Santa Ana. The flight was not only the first flight to Catalina Island, but was also the longest over-water flight in world history to date and the first time in world history that an aircraft had taken off from water and landed on water on the same flight.

From this humble beginning, Martin went on to form one of the world’s most successful and innovative aerospace corporations, supplying military and civilian aircraft throughout the twentieth century, including the famed B-26 Marauder and the Martin JRM Mars amphibian.

Today, the Martin name lives on in Lockheed Martin, a partnership that was formed with Lockheed Corporation in 1995.

Utilizing military, vintage, and specialty aircraft, this event will bring spectators of all ages to Catalina for the weekend, said Teckenoff. Static displays at the Airport-in-the-Sky (AVX) and in Avalon will allow visitors the opportunity to visually inspect the aircraft. Down in Avalon, street fair booths with an aeronautical theme will line the town’s waterfront thoroughfare, Crescent Avenue.

Hospitality viewing of the event will be available from hotel balconies with a VIP event held on the veranda of Avalon’s iconic Casino Ballroom. On the evening of September 29th, the Casino will also host a dance concert open to the public. There will also be a 5k and a half marathon run though the hills of Avalon. With limited accommodations available on the island, Teckenoff stresses that reservations should be made early.
