I heard stories about how, back in the day, "new join" Marines would have a single pen or "ink stick" issued to them. Such isn't the case in today's Corps. The new Skilcraft Executive Magnus pens are much larger, but have a good weight to them. The downfall is the difficulty of holstering it in your cammie blouse without it looking like you have a large writing instrument holstered into your blouse.
I prefer the more lightweight, old school piece of gear.
