The Defense Department recently nominated Marine Corps General James Mattis to be the next Commander of U.S. Central Command (pending confirmation by the Senate), replacing Army General David Petraeus, who has replaced Army General McChrystal as Commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
General Mattis was a front runner to take the Marine Corps top spot, replacing General Conway, as the Commandant. The job went to the current Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Amos.
