It's not uncommon to receive an award well after you've departed a unit. In most cases, if you've been in long enough, the real reward for your efforts is the feeling of accomplishment and knowing the positive impact you've had on the "mission."
I left Marine Air Support Squadron 3 at the end of November 2011 knowing full well that I "earned my pay" by applying my then seventeen years of experience and working with honor and integrity. In return, my units leadership felt it was necessary to reward me with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
I am proud to say that I had the privilege in playing a small part in the success my unit.
