In every county I've visited and both combat zones been a part of, I could always count on the USO to provide that taste of home. When I first arrived on Okinawa, I spent many hours sucking up the WiFi at the USO talkin to Jillian via Face Time/Skype while eating their delicious restaurant meals. I dont know what I would've done without them.

In early 1941, with global tensions escalating, our military was growing, and so were the needs of our troops. But at the time, there was no single organization focused solely on supporting our men and women in uniform.

At the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, six civilian agencies (Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA, National Catholic Community Services, National Jewish Welfare Board and National Travelers Aid Association) came together and created a partnership called the United Service Organizations for National Defense, later known as the USO. It became official on 4 February 1941.

Here's a great pair of plain, yet super classic looking Vintage Engineer Boots. Could be Horsehide, but ya neva know. Here's another seller who proves you don't need to sell the leather as Horsehide (even when it's really not, like half the other sellers out there) and still make decent scratch, 'cause you know the boots are true collectors.

If these were smaller, they'd definitely bring in a couple/few more bills.

Mr. Hitoshi Tsujimoto, American collector, entrepreneur, faithful+ recreater of classic American clothing and founder and president of the high-end workwear brand The Real McCoy's sent me this photo of his super rare and eccentric Buco jacket.

If you're a fan of his work, then you know how amazing his Buco products are. Is this a hint of an upcoming jacket? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

If you're familiar with my blog, you know I'm a huge fan of vintage Brown's Beach jackets and vests. Here's an incredible find, but I would be just as happy with the Cushman interpretation for mere pocket change compared to what this sold for.

Well, it looks like the days of military-issued BCG's ("Birth Control Glasses") are a thing of the past. It was announced recently the military has decided to replace these gawdy glasses with something with a more stylish look.

BCG is the nickname given to the glasses because service members believe that while wearing BCGs, it is impossible to attract the opposite sex because of their unflattering appearance.

Circa 1996

Manufactured by the United States Safety Service Co. since 1990, this design reflects a specification for durability at the lowest possible cost. They are large enough to provide a wide field of vision, but can be so large as to interfere with peripheral vision or the sights of a rifle under certain circumstances. As well as being waterproof, they are also impact resistant and satisfy many eye protection requirements.

Prior to the current style, the standard issue were a black pair which were similar to the 1950's style horn-rimmed eyeglasses, aka the "Buddy Holly" glasses.

The new glasses have not yet been revealed, but quite frankly, I like the black ones and would love to own a pair.

I'm not a fan of lug soles/heels, but it doesn't take much to have work done to replace them. Even after repairs, these boots would still be a great deal and they already come with custom roller buckles.

I've featured plenty of vintage Knapp Engineer Boots in the past, but nothing like this. This is the holy grail of 'em all. The bad news is we'll run into something like this once in a blue moon. The good news is one can obtain the look of these boots with the Mister Freedom Road Champs.

These boots were sold back in 2008 by the fine folks at Rockahula. There was no mention of how much they were sold for, but I'd definitely pay a pretty penny if I ever came across these.

It's no secret the Road Champs are an original pattern inspired by early American boots, but it's possible Christophe ran across a similar pair during his 2 1/2 years of research and development. His work clearly paid off...

Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, that is. This is the compulsive collecting of guitars. According to the urban dictionary, it's "when you check out an awesome new guitar that you just HAVE to own, no matter what the cost."

No matter what the definition, this disorder can become costly. I know. I had GAS for a long while and now have a nice little stash of top shelf maple guit-fiddles. Just when I thought I was rid of my GAS, T.K. Smith pulls me back in with his mastery in guitars.

Some may know TK as the guitarist for the Smith's Ranch Boys, Bonebreak Syncopators and Big Sandy & and the Fly-Rite Trio. Some may know him as the extremely talented Design & Fabricator, the guitar aficionado, or just the hot rodder. No matter what, I consider this gentleman the "jack of all trades...that are all things cool."

This is the reason why I am developing GAS again:

Pickups: This is a work-in-progress - more progress than work as it's almost done with an anticipated release by summer. TK crafted this to sound like a cross between his two favorite pickups, the "Charlie Christian" passive single coil and those used on the Stratosphere.

Anyone who's had gas like I have has, one time or another, wanted a Gibson ES-150 like Charlie Christian. This pickup is sure to create a sound that's outta this world.

Any Bigsby guitar fan would love to own an inlayed pickguard. These are all carefully handcrafted.

Out of necessity...and a hankerin' to leathercraft, I used some extra leather to make a coin pouch for my stockpile of yen.

Unlike US coins, which I hate carrying around (or rather hate the noise they make in the pocket), it's hard not to carry yen coins as they come in denominations of 100 and 500. Having said that, I traded in my ghetto mini zip lock bag I carried around for over two weeks and quickly stitched up what was initially intended as a coin pouch and ended up being a card wallet with a coin section.

My well used zip lock.

I find it hard not to use studs when dealing with leather. The outer card wallet slot prevents having to constantly open the wallet since my military ID is used multiple times a day. The flap slot was intended for my dog tag-shaped room key, but it's totally unsafe and begs for me to lose my key.

My favorite Japanese periodicals are not a rarity back home, but definitely hard to find. You'll find out, however, that they are costly or even sold out at the places that do offer them.

I wasn't sure how difficult it was going to be trying to locate them here in "The Keystone of the Pacific," but as I set out for the location of a place known to offer these vintage fashion resource magazines as told to me by Chris, the owner of American Wave Vintage and a super fella, it proved not too difficult at all.

I spent quite a bit of time talking with Chris, shorty after my arrival, about vintage clothing, life on the island and his awesome vintage clothing shop. His shop boasts some rare digs and his prices are easy on the wallet. I learned that most shops specializing in vintage Americana are pretty much just outside my doorstep.

Yesterday's journey began with a stop at an amazing vintage duplex (vintage furniture shop and clothing store), Ragged Glory and Stomp, respectively. At Ragged Glory, I was greeted by a cool cat named Nakayama and I was pleasantly surprised when he immediately recognized me from my blog. He showed me around the store and I was amazed at how much "top shelf" mid-century furniture and tchotchke's I was surrounded by. One can easily have the coolest pad on the island by shopping here.

During the visit, Nakayama showed me a Lightning magazine from 2005 which featured the shop and I was super surprised when he offered it to me. Turns out I didn't have to go too far for a magazine afterall. I then headed next door to Stomp, the clothing portion of the shop, and was equally amazed at the vintage clothing inventory. The prices for both the furniture and clothing are not overwhelming and definitely on par with what I'd expect pieces at home to go for - definitely a place to put down as a list of stops if you're ever in the area.

I continued on my journey and finally after a three (plus) mile trek ended up at the San-A mall. I looked around for a split second and knew there was no way possible I'd find the magazines in this large store. I made a beeline for the register and at this point was super appreciative that Nakayama gifted me the magazine. All I did was show it to the lady, she punched it up on the system and ushered me to the location.

There was a treasure trove of magazines, but I had to choose wisely as I only brought so much Yen.

What I loved about the selection is that a lot of back issues from many months gone by were still available. I ended up choosing these four magazines, one of which I am offering as a giveaway (details here).

All-in-all, it was an enjoyable day and can't wait 'til new issues are made available.

Without the tag, it's difficult to determine the exact brand as a lot of parts and hardware were cross pollinated between a number of Engineer Boot companies back in the day.

These can easily be Red Wing's or even Sears. Either way, I kind of agree with the final price for a couple of reasons.

The first reason is the lack of decent Vintage Engineer Boots being offered at auction even though everyone swears up and down their boots are "30's - 50's," made of "Horsehide," and are more rare than hen's teeth. The reality of late is that none of the boots offered recently are remotely close to being gems, but rather mediocre dime-a-dozen boots made of substandard split leather.

The other reason is the attractive wear and patina that only decades of use can develop.

This obviously isn't a rare pair, but one of the nicer, classic-looking ones offered in recent times.

Here's an unknown brand with similar qualities and details that lead me to believe they are from the same company.

Here's a nice pair of circa 1970's / early 1980's Chippewa Engineer Boots that sold for a mere $40. What doesn't make sense is how the modern pair below sold for $150. They were both about the same size.

These were also described as being "leather lined." This couldn't be further from the truth. At least "Horsehide" wasn't used to describe them.

REPRODUCTION 1930'S HARLEY-DAVIDSON RACING SWEATERS

The folks at Gasoline Cowboys have produced some amazing competition sweaters commissioned by the official Harley-Davidson Museum. These are quite the faithful reproduction, early century racing sweaters and made with with 100% Wool in the good ol' US of A.

Everything from the double cuffs and waistband on the maroon and black sweaters as well as the long wide ribbed cuffs and waistband on the black/off-white sweater were captured. They've also reproduced the early black tag and silver-winged patch.

No moth holes or musty smells here.

I'm uncertain as t the high demand for these boots that are clearly (at a minimum) circa 1960's, but I sure hope the interest wasn't sparked by the loose use of "horsehide" or the "unique band/collar." At best, these Vintage Engineer Boots are made with double tanned cowhide and the added collar appears to be an attempt to alter them (shorties?) at some point, but reattached due to a change of heart.

Also, notice the use of brass rivets on one boot, but not in the other. These boots, to me, scream "factory seconds" with a side order of failed period modifications.

This is in no way intended to bash the seller (that's never my intention), but to bring to light certain things to key in on when the decision to spend hard-earned money on this style of footwear is made.

I guess thirty to fifty bucks would sell me on them. I'd then remove the buckles for later use and perhaps use the rest as scrap leather.

There have been quite a few auctions the past couple of years offering vintage German combat/biker boots that sold for mere change. Every pair I've run accross seemed to be missing one thing...buckled instep straps.

Here's a great example of how they look.

Great profile on this pair. Too bad they are a larger size, which is why they sold for a reasonable price. In the size 8-10 range, these would have easily sold for upwards to $700 and beyond.

They ideal toe profile collectors strive to own, however, it's very important to know that unless these are at least a half size larger than ones normal size the toes will in fact "inflate." I think we all get caught up with photos depicting flattened, non-steel toe boots made popular by vintage biker photos from the 1930's-1950's, but unless you ride a bike all the time or your toes are a half to an inch away from the boot toe area it is difficult to maintain this desired look - I know this first hand as I've purchased at least three vintage pairs like this back in the late '90's. Something to consider before dropping your hard-earned money on that sweet pair of Vintage Engineer Boots.

I discovered John Lofgren's Speedway-Shop on eBay many years ago, but have only had the opportunity to purchase one of his skull rings back in '06 as well as a pair of Cushman S&P trousers some time later (I was so pleased with these trousers that I ordered a second pair before they all sold out.)

John has been really outdoing himself lately with his namesake brand by offering super high-quality, finely detailed clothing with a workwear flavor, however, don't be surprised when he ventures off into something equally amazing like his Blue Suede Shoes. I don't know why or how I held back from purchasing anything from his line, but after picking up a pair of his limited run denim chinos and S&P workwear shirt I'm definitely a fan and now consider myself a devoted customer - I immediately sent him an e-mail to find out if he had my size in the black denim chinos.

I placed my order on 18 December, the box shipped via Express Mail Service (Japan Post) on 19 December and arrived at my door by 11:00 am, 24 December. That is completely unheard of in my world. It was quicker than any Stateside shop I've ever dealt with.

Many of John Lofgren's brand clothing are limited release, so If there's something that catches your fancy don't hesitate to place your order.

If you're looking to break from the mold of your traditional denim, these are definitely a pair to look into. I can't wait to see how they age. It has a classic traditional fit only found in originals. It has green selvedge with a super long inseam for nice thick cuffs or can be cut to size for tall Cat's. The slash pockets and rear pocket darts provide a balance between wearing these to the office or over your Vintage Engineer Boots.

This is now my favorite workwear shirt. I couldn't have asked for a better fit. My perfect fit for a vintage shirt would be a size 38 that includes 17" shoulders and 24" sleeves. This shirt is a dead on tailored fit! It's fitted in the chest and waist with a slight flare at the bottom allowing it to worn either tucked and untucked. The material is similar to the S&P covert twill material used on Post O'Alls brand tops.

What's not shown or described is that this shirt is made with premium Japanese selvedge cotton - it's not just the gussets.

My favorite part of this this shirt is how John captured the traditional vintage pointy collar (my pet peeve with reproduction workwear or even rockabilly shirts). The only other person to nail this is Christophe Loiron. It's this type of attention to detail and passion for for what they do that makes me a return customer.

I've been a huge fan T.K. Smith's guitar styles since I first attended a Big Sandy & The Fly-Rite Trio gig at the Palomino back in the early 1990's (and more recently of his craftsmanship - T.K. Smith Design and Fabrication), so when I read the latest blog post about his approach and mindset in the recording studio, I thought it was too good not to share:

"Someone from France put this recording of Big Sandy and The Fly Rite Trio up on YouTube awhile back. It’s one of the few recordings I’ve played on that I can listen to without thinking that I should of played something other than what I actually played. This is probably because I worked out the entire solo note for note the night before and played the same thing on each take. (can’t remember how many takes it took).

Everything the Fly-Rite Trio recorded was done live with a couple of mikes. If one person screws up, or is unhappy with their performance, you have to start over. It can be challenging to say the least, but it’s my favorite way to record. I think live recording is the only way to get an accurate representation of what a band truly sounds like. If you’re a musician and haven’t recorded live, try it. You’ll have greater respect for the way the musicians of the 40’s and 50’s recorded. Think about the recordings with multiple ‘Hot’ improvised solos and how hard that would be to do live.

Recorded around 1989. We had 500 copies pressed to 78RPM record. I think we sold most of them in the UK. If I could do it over, I’d like to have another crack at the solo on the flip side, I’m Gonna Leave."

"Hurd Shoe Company"

D.D. Hurd began as a shoe salesman in 1867 for the firm Case & Tallman. When the firm dissolved in 1892 Hurd formed a partnership with M.J. Fitzgerald, a traveling salesman for the old firm. In 1911 the two erected a modern five story brick building at the corner of Main and First streets in Utica, New York in order to house heir ever-expanding shoe and rubber goods company.

Dissolving in the 1980's, the Hurd Shoe Company managed to survive the challenges of new markets, new styles and distribution methods throughout the years. During the companies latter years, they became wholesalers in the footwear and hosiery business. It handled men's dress and work shoes, sneakers, children's shoes and women's sport and casual shoes.

Looking to break away from traditional Christmas movies this year? Try the B-Movie, Santa Claus, from 1959.

Santa Claus, high above the North Pole in his cloud-borne castle equipped with more surveillance devices than the Impossible Mission Force, prepares to deliver presents on Christmas night. Santa is especially interested in helping Lupita, the daughter of a poor family who wants nothing more than a doll; and a young boy whose parents are so wealthy they never spend any time with him (Santa fixes this by feeding them Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters). However, the Devil will have none of this and sends his minion, Pitch, to foil Santa's plans. Pitch in turn recruits three Naughty Boys to help him set traps for Santa.

This film did not receive a general release in the United States. The U.S. distributor, K. Gordon Murray, booked the film as a special children's matinée attraction in which the film would only be shown once or twice.

CITIZEN KANE OSCAR AWARD TO BE AUCTIONED

On December 20th, the Oscar award Orson Welles won for penning Citizen Kane will be put for auction. Accordig to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, winners of this prestiges award must promise to first offer it to them for $1.00 prior to selling it. The reserve price is expected to be set between $600,000 and $1 million.

Although not my favorite classic movie, it was my first and I do credit it for launching my fascination with the silver screen when I was kid.

I try not to post active auctions, but I just can't help it when I run across one that really catches my attention.

These super early "Moc Toe" boots would normally, especially at this size, gain my attention for one second, but the below evidence is definitely worth a quick post. They're interesting because eBay seller furvella is currently selling a 1925 Montgomery Ward & Co catalog that features these exacts boots.

I'm not all too positive why I'm posting these active boots when I have a little interest in bidding, but the information is too good not to document here. After all, I started this blog to provide myself reference material to support my obsession.

Those aren't price tag staples. They appear to serve some sort of function as they are featured on furvellas catalog photo. I'm a fan of Engineer Boots with cut tops, but the pinked tops and staples on these boots kind of suggest a lower quality...perhaps? After all, they are boys' shoes.

Nonetheless, they are a nice piece of boot history.

"Same drill than the Ranch Blouse, we have selected some New Old Stock selvedge denim from our archives to make the Californian Lot.44

Cut and sew has been a challenge, as previously mentioned, but we are happy with the results. One “five pocket” pattern in about 35 different denim… 28” to 33” width old shuttle loom made selvedge denim, collected throughout years of warehouses digging. Origin Japan and USA. Click on scan below for approximate colors and selvedge IDs

The pattern of the Californian Lot.44 is very similar to that of the Californian Lot.54, with a few design modifications:

* Pattern: Original Mister Freedom® inspired by traditional 1950′s era blue jeans.
* Fabrics: The assorted New Old Stock selvedge denim limited edition is only available at the MF® Beverly Blvd location, and at “Bazar” (1108c Abbot Kinney Blvd.,Venice, CA 90291).
* Lot.44 vs. Lot.54 details: The Lot.44 has an added back cinch strap and longer inseam.
* Pocketing: 100% cotton NOS stripe ticking denim. Some bags are made with indigo/white plaid twill. Random.
* Fit: Based on the general silhouette/image of the “BRMC” blue jeans of the Wild Ones (1953). Traditional mid-rise, “tubular” silhouette legs, fit seat.
* Construction: All made in U.S.A. Five pockets style. Selvedge legs and button hole fly flap. Riveted back pockets with ‘zigzag flush’ stitching. Original “M” back pocket stitch design, securing inside all cotton twill backing.
* Stitching: All 100% cotton colour thread. We are using an original MF 12 types of gauge/colour combination thread for each pair of jeans. Main colours are Orange/Yellow, non colorfast.
* Trims: Original Mister Freedom casted combo metal fly buttons, steel back. Unmarked copper flat top rivetting.
* Labeling: Handmade original MF® debossed natural cowhide leather patch on right back pocket. Cheeze cloth size labeling stitched in rear part of waist band.
* Packaging: In the USA, the Californian Lot.44 comes in an old school cardboard box with original artwork. This sturdy box can be used for storage of small items, please re-use.
* Shrinkage: All fabrics are RAW and unwashed. Due to the assorted denim, shrinkage is all over the place. Please refer to chart below, where we shrink tested some of the jeans (cold soak for about 30mn, no agitation. Turned imside out and machine dryed for about 20mn, until 80% dried). Measurements are approximate.

I recently picked up this pair of barely used (only "twice") studded RRL Engineer Boots for a shocking $390 and much to my surprise, they far exceeded every expectation - by far one of my best economical scores. I gotta say that there's nothing more exciting in my boot world than to open up a box with a pair of much-anticipated Engineer Boots.

These were described as the "distressed" version, which looks as if the hardware was treated with a coat of black stain. Also, the studs are of the smoked version rather than nickel - otherwise, I don't notice anything different. The stain comes off with a rub of the fingernail, but I think I'll leave it to fall off naturally.

No photo I've come across, to include my own low-quality ones, show how truly amazing these boots are. In person, as with the Mister Freedom® Road Champs, they feel like a million bucks in your hands. Not much in the way of details can be found on them, but it was discovered they are made with Horween Chromexcel Cowhide leather. The instep and upper straps feel like they are made with a 7-8 oz hide whereas the everything else is made with a lighter, yet amazingly stiff weight. They don't collapse when held laid upside down flat in your hands.

There's no doubt these will age well as there's already a hint of brown coming through the leather on one boot.

The Road Champs will forever be my number one's and (for now) these are my number two's.

The profile on these boots are in a class of their own. They are narrow through the vamp and become a bit roomier in the heel counter area. This causes heel slippage during wear, but this is easily remedied by tightening the instep strap. In my case, I had to add another hole without compromising the studs. The odd thing about the adjustment holes on the instep is that only three were punched.

I think my urge to purchase a pair of WESCO Narrow's has been curbed with the purchase of these amazing boots.

The stacked heels are perfect - not too high nor too low.

Unlike the Road Champs these boots are made with a celastic toe, so don't expect any immediate flat toes to develop.

In perfect-fitting boots, I wear an 8D in Whites Semi-Dress, 7 1/2 in Road Champs, 8D in (new) Chippewa's, 7 1/2 in Toy's McCoy Bucos. These fit the same in the 8D. I couldn't have picked a better size.

CUSTOM STUDDED HAIR-ON-HIDE TRUCKER WALLET

Mr. Innis Lawrence of Fine Light Trading commissioned a custom wallet some time ago and I finally found time to put one together. He didn't have any specifics, however, he did show interest in the last few wallets I made. With that, I combined a few elements from each wallet resulting in my favorite wallet creation yet.

This is a HUGE wallet that clocks in at 7" tall and over 3 1/2" wide. The thickness is just over 1 1/2", empty.

The inner and outer sections are ready to become one.

I kept the interior quite simple with five card slots, bill/receipt slot and buttoned coin pouch.

The use of hair-on-hide as an inset rather than an applique really sets it off.

And a little something to match the custom FLT belt I made him a while back.

MY NEW FINE LIGHT TRADING MARINE CORPS RING - PART II

My new custom Fine Light Trading Marine Corps ring arrived yesterday and have to say that Innis has managed to hit it out of the ball park, yet again, with another masterpiece. The authenticity of his rings as compared to any original is so indistinct that I'm a true fan. I'm definitely going for a custom skull and crossbone ring next.

Over a year ago I featured the exact same model that had "Friedman-Shelby" stamped on the upper shaft. They went unsold at only eight bills.

I still can't get ove the floating instep strap, otherwise this is a great pair of Vintage Engineer Boots with an attractive profile. The brass hardware, toe tracks, cut top and pristine condtion are definite pluses.

A little steep in the sales department, I'd still have paid no more than twelve bills for this pair. I have a gut feeling this pair is going to the Land of the Rising Sun.
