BOOTS WORTH BUYING

Those familiar with Shell Cordovan knows what it takes to make a pair of shoes or even six inch boots, let alone a pair of Engineer Boots.  This paired with the style and reputation of The Real McCoy's makes for a really nice pair of Buco's.

A little pricey at over 2k when new (plus shipping and proxy fees from Japan), you can't beat it if these can be obtained at close to the starting bid price.

THIS JUST IN ...

As usual, this piece is 100% handcrafted without the help of machines, professional templates, dies or computer programs.  The most high speed item used to create my leather pieces is a mechanical pencil to draw the template onto a piece of cardboard.

READER MAIL

I receive a ton of mail from with subjects ranging from sizing advice to my opinion on certain brands and models as well as recommended topics for future posts ... and some out of left field, but an e-mail from Michael was unlike any I've received from a VEB reader.

Michael and I have been exchanging e-mails about Engineer Boots for some time now and he recently contacted me to let me know he wanted to find a new home for the very boots I helped to provided sizing information on.

www.vintageengineerboots.com

This was all contingent on the ability to get his hands a pair of John Lofgren & Co. Engineer Boots in his size.  Something tells me he got his boots.

Brand:  Wesco
Model: Boss (Built in the spirit of Japan's "Narrow")
Toe: Motorcycle Patrol (no celastic)
Leather: Brown Smooth
Soles: Vibram #700 in Brown
Instep Strap: 2" longer
Heel: Standard Boss
Buckles: Nickel Roller

These amazing boots - already perfectly broken in - were a gift from Michael as a gesture for the helpful information I provide on this blog as well as my service to the country. I'm not the type of person to let such an amazing deed go unrecognized, but to show what an upstanding dude he is, Michael didn't immediately accept my offer for a custom wallet.  Of course the offer stands, indefinitely, and is not limited to a custom wallet.

Thanks again, Michael!  You've built a great pair of boots.

Stay tuned for step-by-step instructions on how to swap your buckles, which will be demonstrated on these boots.

THIS JUST IN ...

I was approached by a return-client who asked if I'd like to take on another leathercraft challenge and without knowing what it was I accepted - I'm always up for a good challenge.

Having just finished this piece, I realized what an honor it was to make this for him.  It's a case for a compact T:Slim insulin pump that attaches to the belt.

I used natural 2-3 ounce Japanese tannery Wagyū hide and 2-3 ounce brown chrome-tanned Japanese tannery Wagyū as well as exclusive Japanese wrapped core spun engineered for heavy duty performance. As usual, this piece was completely hand made without the aid of any machines, professional templates or fancy computer programs.

Feel free to contact me at villanuevado@gmail.com to discuss a unique, custom leather piece for you or that special someone.

ROLLER BUCKLES

I've had an influx of orders for my nickel and brass roller buckles since I first announced their release, so I've decided to offer them on my Etsy shop.

Below is a custom pair of Motor Patrol Toe WESCO Engineer Boots with my antiqued brass buckles. These were sent to WESCO's during the build, but any Cobbler can do the job for your existing  boots.

RARE 1950'S SEARS WEARMASTER ENGINEER BOOTS

Update:  Looks like Sears Wearmasters were contracted boots from another company.  More to follow ...

Brand: Sears Roebuck and Co.
Model: Wearmaster Western Made
Circa: 1950's
Color: Black
Size: 7
Measurements:
Length: 11"
Soles: Full Composition Biltrite
Leather: Horsehide
Hardware: Brass
Sold For: $365 / 11 Bids

Here's one that flew under the radar.  These amazing shorty Vintage Engineer Boots, with their signature Wearmaster Western Made vamp, should have sold for at least double the final selling price.  If these were sold to a Japanese buyer, expect to see them offered for sale between the twelve to fifteen bill range.

The shrunken leather heels and midsoles, flattened toe box and perfect patina are just a few amazing characteristics that make up these rare boots.  Congrats to the lucky winner of the auction.

THIS JUST IN ...

Here are a couple of custom orders I've finished this past week.  All my leather pieces are 100% handcrafted without the aid of sewing machines, fancy die cutters, or professional templates.  It's just me, some basic tools and a real passion for this type of stuff.

TRUST A TRUE ORIGINAL PAIR OF VINTAGE CHIPPEWA ENGINEER BOOTS

For those in search of a pair of early vintage Chippewa Engineer Boots, I recommend not settling for anything less than a TRUE original like this 1940's pair that sold overseas for just over $1,000 - worth Every hard-earned penny.  The search may take some time, but wait will absolutely pay off in the end.

CHIPPEWA'S NOT-SO-ORIGINAL ENGINEER BOOT COLLECTION

There's no doubt vintage Chippewa Engineer Boots are some of the best out there with a look so classic that collectors are willing to dish out good money to own a pair. Brando wore them in The Wild One and Dean rocked them on Rebel, so it's only natural for a collector to want to be part of such an iconic past.

Chippewa recently announced the release of their "Archival" collection and based on the few below photographs that have made their way onto the pages of the world wide web, this collector is left wondering, "Haven't I seen this model before? Oh wait. This is their current model 97863 that they've merely upgraded with Horween leather, an early-style label and recycled buckles used on their Real McCoy's Chippewa line. They surely can't be trying to pass these off as their "early" model now could they?" It's true, folks.

With an endless library of archived material, and perhaps actual patterns, at their fingertips, the folks at Chippewa have fallen short of the finish line with their "premium" collection of Vintage Engineer Boots.

Model 97863 (right)

This tall pair considered to be a replica of (more like "inspired by" with noticeable shortfalls from the original) one of Chippewa's oldest known styles - definitely not the first of its kind as other companies have beat them to the punch - will meet only a narrow niche market looking for tall Engineer Boots. I've archived some amazingly true vintage and rare 17" Engineer Boots on this blog that have sold for close to nothing, so these won't be flying off the shelf without the help of an earthquake.  For those hard pressed for tall Chippewa's, the 27908 soft toe model can be obtained for a mere two bills, new.

With a scheduled release rumored to be sometime early fall I predict that the curious will spend their hard-earned money for a pair and a lot will quickly find their way at online auctions or online forums paving the way for the not-so-curious to be able to pick up a used pair at a reduced cost. Not all is lost, though. Their line of laced workboots look promising.

I really expected much more from this company.  Oh well, back to the drawing board ...

Brands/Models worth considering instead:
Chippewa - 27863 (steel toe) 97863 (non-steel toe)
Frye "Brando" / "Rand"
Lofgren & Co.
Mister Freedom "Road Champ"
The Real McCoy's Buco
Toys McCoy Beck
Red Wing model 2268 (online auctions)
WESCO "Boss"
White's "Nomad"

...and countless more.
